Why more people are shopping in Billingham as big names sign up for long-term

Supermarket giant Asda has committed to the town for a further 10 years, while Cooplands, shoe repair and key cutting specialists Timpsons and Boots, have all signed for another five years. Discount department store Boyes agreed a further 15-year lease earlier this year, securing its long-term future in the town.

Andrew Wilkinson, director at Connect Property North-East (CPNE), said “We continue to see good interest from retail and leisure operators seeking opportunities in Billingham and we continue to work with our partners and key retailers to unlock even greater potential in the future. Traditional high street retail has been impacted nationally but Billingham is “bucking a trend of sorts”. We are seeing a sustainable town centre able to evolve by retaining and attracting the right ingredients of retail, leisure and the service sector which is crucial for the centre to remain relevant and attractive to the community. Open shopping centres are showing particular resilience during Covid restrictions which are likely with us for some time yet.”
