Billingham town centre has got its permanent Post Office back.
A new Post Office and general store has taken over empty premises at Queensway, on a 10-year lease – months after it was announced the town’s nearby Crown Office would shut.
A widespread cull of Post Office branches announced earlier this year will see hundreds of staff lose their jobs across the company’s network. The new Billingham franchise opened the day after the old branch closed its doors and will also offer stationery, lottery and snacks. Over the past two years, Billingham has seen big names including Subway, Aldi and Costa open branches.
Tony Donnelly, Billingham town centre manager, said: “A Post Office is an integral part of any community, and has been in the UK for generations. “We’re really pleased that the General Store has taken on the Post Office franchise. “It’s important that the local community in Billingham still have full access to the Post Office facilities in the town centre.”
